Our Sauna Story

Born and raised in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, we grew up taking saunas often. In Shawnee’s case, every Saturday night was reserved for a “sauna and swim get together” with the entire family. We grew accustomed to swimming in icy Lake Superior between sauna steams, using one extreme as a short reprieve from the other, a hot and cold ritual that always left us feeling relaxed, renewed and ridiculously awesome.

As we settled into adulthood life had a way of pushing us farther and farther away from accessible beachside saunas, so we decided to build one we could take anywhere the road meets the water.

Shortly after trying it out, we realized we needed to share this lifestyle with our neighbors, and just like that, Sauna on Kuuma was born!

Sauna on Kuuma is a Finnish phrase translating to “the sauna is hot!” Growing up, Shawnee heard this phrase often from her grandparents, saying, “Sauna on Kuuma,” to let the entire family know, “The sauna is hot and ready to go!”
